General Description of the Department

The department was established as a division of Yamanashi University Hospital in April, 1983. Currently (2007), we are equipped with 8 outpatient oral units, 2 inpatient oral units, a ward with 7 beds, an infectious oral disease treatment corner with 1 oral unit, and 1 emergency oral unit. The department is approved as a training facility by the Japanese Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Staff Member (Faculty)

Kiyoshi Harada (Professor) 

Graduated from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Faculty of Dentistry in 1985. Graduated from the Graduate School of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Faculty of Dentistry in 1989. Appointed to a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Yamanashi Hospital in 2006 after serving as Associate Professor at Tokyo Medical and Dental University. Redeployed to a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Division of Medicine, Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Medicine and Engineering, University of Yamanashi in 2008.

 

Yasufumi Niinaka (Assistant Professor)
Graduated from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Faculty of Dentistry in 1991. Graduated from the Graduate School of Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Faculty of Dentistry in 1995. Transferred to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Yamanashi Hospital as an Assistant Professor in 2006 after serving as an Assistant at Tokyo Medical and Dental University for 3 years.

 

Yoshio Nakano (Assistant)
Graduated from Hokkaido University, Faculty of Dentistry in 1994. Appointed to an Assistant of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Yamanashi Medical University in 1996 after serving as a Resident at the University Hospital of the same University. Redeployed to an Assistant of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Yamanashi Hospital in 2002.

 

Masatoshi Higuchi (Assistant)

Graduated from Nihon University, School of Dentistry at Matsudo in 2003. Studied at the Dental Hospital, Tokyo Medical and Dental University as a Research Student from 2003 to 2006. Appointed to an Assistant of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Yamanashi Hospital in 2008 after serving as a Resident at the same University Hospital for 2 years.

Theme of Education and Research

1.     Study on morphological and functional changes before to after orthognathic surgery in dentofacial deformity patients.

2.     Study on morphological and functional stability after orthognathic surgery in dentofacial deformity patients.

3.     Clinical and experimental study on distraction osteogenesis.

4.     Study on functional reconstruction of the jaw bone using dental implants.

5.     Study on epithelialmesenchymal transition.

General Description of Medical Practice

Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of dentistry that includes diagnosis and treatment of lesions, injuries, and defects in the oral and maxillofacial region. Both functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues are needed in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

 

The department offers a wide variety of services

I.      Extraction of teeth, Third molar, etc.

II.    Diagnosis and treatment of oral mucosal disease.

III. Diagnosis and treatment of temporomandibular joint disorders.

IV.  Diagnosis and surgical treatment of oral and maxillofacial injuries and fractures.

V.    Treatment of the patients with cleft lip and palate.

 

Our specialty includes treatment of dentofacial deformity patients with malocclusion using orthognathic surgery (Fig. 1) and distraction osteogenesis (Fig. 2). In addition, our department offers functional reconstruction of the jaw bone using bone grafting, artificial bone, distraction osteogenesis, and dental implants.
In 1989, “Maxillofacial prosthetic” was approved as an advanced medical technology by the Health and Welfare Ministry of Japan.
